Video: Black college students complain how Obamacare has left them uninsured

“If you like your plan, you can keep your plan.”

Most Americans believed President Obama when he repeatedly made this promise over and over again over the course of two years, prior to the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010.

Now, of course, we know this was a lie, as millions of Americans are losing their coverage and health insurance companies drop their plans because they no longer comply with ridiculous minimum coverage requirements under Obamacare.

And, as you might imagine, that is ticking off quite a few people – among them, college students, one of Obama’s strongest centers of support.

According to student journalists at Campus Reform, scores of college students are among those who are seeing their coverage vanish, and again, for the same reason Americans are losing their private plans: They don’t comply with the law:

Students at Bowie State University assailed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on Thursday after administrators cancelled a low cost school-wide health care plan due to new regulations in the law.

‘It’s stupid and it’s Obama’s fault’

Administrators at Bowie State, located in Maryland and one of the nation’s most elite historically black campuses, said it was either drop the coverage – which had been costing students about $50 per semester – or keep offering it but at dramatic price increases. Because of Obamacare’s mandates, rates for plans would have soared to $900 a semester.

“Bowie State University has suspended offering health insurance for domestic students for the 2013-2014 academic year,” states the school’s official website. “Due to new requirements of the Affordable Care Act which will go into effect on January 1, 2014, the cost of insurance for domestic students will increase to approximately $1800 per year.”

That was far too much for many students. In a video, interviewed students lamented the law’s damage to their policies.

“I can’t afford anything right now,” one said. “I can’t even afford my loans.”

“We don’t have that money,” said another. “We can barely afford books.”

Several students said that they felt they had been let down.

“It’s stupid and it’s Obama’s fault,” one said. “You haven’t done anything, Obama, and I’m disappointed in you.”

“What it was hyped up to be, was that it was supposed to solve a lot of problems and help a lot of people, and it’s not really doing that,” said another.

Many of the students said they had no idea their plans had been canceled. The cancellations were announced only in an email to their student email addresses.

‘Not to worry – mom and dad will cover you’

In a statement to Campus Reform, Bowie State officials said they were confident that Obamacare would fill any voids left by the canceled plans.

“Most students are now able to be covered under their parent’s health plans up to age 26 at no additional cost and new affordable coverage is becoming available through the Maryland State Insurance Exchange System,” the statement read.

Earlier this year, Principle Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest suggested that Obama himself might intervene to keep Bowie State students from losing their coverage.

“The President and this administration have been strong supporters of historically black colleges and universities all across the country,” said Earnest, speaking from the White House on August 20. “Funding for those colleges and universities has increased under President Obama.

“[T]he record — the President’s record on these issues — he has a bias in favor of historically black colleges and universities because of the service they provide and because of the quality education that they provide to their students,” he added.
