A national grassroots parents’ rights group has released a list of 168 pro-transgender school districts governing 5,904 schools nationwide that have policies purposely hiding students’ transitioning status from their parents in the name of “gender affirmation.”
The Parents Defending Education (PDE) created the non-comprehensive list of school districts revealing that public school administrators, teachers and support staff in so many jurisdictions are committed to advancing the youth “transgender” agenda, which includes using the latest “woke” lingo to describe trans students’ “gender-expansive status.” According to the Virginia-based group, the districts — together serving more than three million students nationwide — have rules on the books that prevent faculty and staff from disclosing to parents a student’s gender status without that student’s permission.
The list included two of the largest school districts in the country, Chicago Public Schools and Los Angeles Unified School District, along with other city jurisdictions like DC Public Schools, Baltimore City Public Schools, San Francisco Unified School District, Portland Public Schools and Seattle Public Schools. Districts from deep-blue university towns in Berkeley and Palo Alto, California also appear on the list, as do 11 districts in deep-red Idaho, 16 in purple Pennsylvania and seven in Virginia. Also, three New York districts and nine districts in New Jersey were listed on the site.
An excerpt from “Gender-Inclusive Schools Procedure” at Anacortes School District in Washington State read: “Before communicating with parents of transgender or gender expansive students, it’s important to ask the student how school employees should refer to the student when talking with their parents and guardians. For parents who are not supportive, or who are not aware of the student’s gender transition at school, referring to their new opposite-sex, transgender name and opposite-sex pronoun could be very dangerous.”
Citing the PDE list, the New York Post reported that the 3,268,752 students affected by such policies go to class in all kinds of districts – large and small, affluent and poor, urban and rural, red and blue states, stretching from North Carolina to Alaska.
PDE President Nicole Neily told the news outlet that the list “only begins to scratch the surface of what is taking place behind closed doors in America’s schools.” (Related: Back-to-school students are being subjected to a whole new wave of transgender indoctrination and left-wing lunacy.)
“This investigation shows that parental exclusion policies are a problem from coast to coast – and that living in a red state doesn’t mean that families are automatically shielded from this issue,” Neily said. “Without a doubt, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of others with similar policies on the books. We urge everyone to keep an eye out – and to let us know if they find something similar in their backyard.”
In July 2022, President Joe Biden’s administration proposed new Title IX regulations to allow the withholding of gender information from parents. The policies have already prompted legal action in some districts. The federal civil rights law that was enacted as part of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or any other education program that receives funding from the federal government.
Vernadette Broyles, who runs the conservative Child and Parental Rights Campaign, is invested in this legal battle. She is pushing school districts and gender clinics alike to stop policies that keep parents in the dark. Such guidance, she said, violates parents’ right to privacy as codified in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, as well as the parents’ 14th Amendment rights.
“Privacy rights are held by the parents for the child, not by the child against their parents,” Broyles told the Washington Free Beacon last year, pointing out that school administrators and teachers are engaging in “intentional obfuscation, driving a wedge between children and parents at a time when children need their parents most.”
Moreover, pro-family activist Lindy Harvey, founder and president of Mission America, said there is no worse betrayal by a school than to withhold from parents vital information about their child that could change that child’s life forever. “If I were a parent of a student today, and this was happening with my child, there would be no limit to the number of lawyers I would call to file as many suits as I could against that school system,” she told WND.
Meanwhile, transgender clinical psychologist Dr. Erica Anderson filed an amicus brief on behalf of a conservative law group suing the school district in Montgomery County, Maryland last year. The brief included that socially transitioning at school as a child “is a major and potentially life-altering decision that requires parental involvement, for many reasons and she does not want to be erased as a transgender person.”
“I don’t want anyone’s prerogatives or identity to be taken away from them,” she said. “But on this one, I align with people who are willing to advocate for parents.”
